Run With The Hunted – Self-Titled Album Review

Just so we’re not mincing words here or anything, Arizona’s Run With The Hunted isn’t reinventing the hardcore wheel. Their press release makes comparisons to Modern Life Is War and Turmoil. Throw in some American Nightmare and The Hope Conspiracy, and you have a much more accurate description.

To be fair, however, hardcore — especially nowadays — is less about innovation and more about improving upon what other people have, done and in that case, Run With The Hunted are able to succeed within their particular genre.

Their self-titled album starts off well enough with the excitedly mosh-friendly, “Magna Cum Laude,” and barrels through a few more similar tempo songs before hitting “Occam’s Tazor,” a tune that — for me — serves as the album’s centerpiece. The song’s pounding drums are the reasons why I’ll sit at desk and play air drums.

The record’s final track, “Reversal Of Fortune,” at over four minutes, is epically long for a hardcore song, but man, does it rip.

It’s easy to compare Run With The Hunted with other bands that have blown through the hardcore scene and in many ways, their self-titled record shows a lot of promise for a band that newer groups will be comparing themselves to someday. While this album certainly has its share of growing pains (a track or two too long, little variation in the songwriting), it’s still pretty solid, and there are certainly some songs here that are some serious dance jams.
