EVERYDAY MUSIC is closing ❤ @everday_music_seattle #Repost @vanishingseattle After nearly 20 yrs on #CapitolHill & 4 different locations, the beloved Everyday Music at 1520 10th Ave is closing May 16th. EM announced in February, citing “ongoing pandemic struggles & no rent relief.” #EverydayMusic offers 100K+ used records, tapes, CDs, VHS, DVDs & more – drawing music lovers & artists from all over the world – including @bill.frisell and @EltonJohn (who went on a vinyl shopping spree)! EM also hosted in-store shows for local groups like @chazzybelt & @sassyblackcat. Opened in 2003 by Scott Kuzma, Everyday Music was displaced from its original Broadway location by light rail construction. In 2008 it moved to #Broadway & Pine in the space that’s now Blick Art Supplies. Everyday moved to 10th Ave in 2010, next to Elliott Bay Book Co for about a year, then was displaced by high rent (the building is owned by Hunter’s Capital). It’s been in its current location next to Rancho Bravo (formerly KFC) for 9 yrs. EM also has a shop in Bellingham & 2 in PDX. Apparently a pandemic rent reduction was asked from landlords & #Seattle’s was the only shop refused. Since 2014, there’s been a #redevelopment plan for the 1926 former #AutoRow building (BMW service garage followed by a parking garage - VS intern Aeon made a music video there!) plus Rancho Bravo, for a 6-story apartment building. Property owner/developer Ron Amunduson told Capitol Hill Seattle those plans aren’t moving forward soon & he’s hoping to find a new tenant. When I stopped in, many customers were expressing sadness at EM’s closure - & dread over what might replace it…as one older gentleman said, “it probably won’t be meant for me.” Silver lining: a couple employees are hoping to carry on EM’s legacy in some way/re-open a smaller record shop elsewhere in the city…stay tuned for more info on how you can support! Azim immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh when she was 6 years old. She has faced many obstacles while pursuing a career as a professional artist. Even her choice of medium was influenced by the financial factors; art supplies like acrylics are expensive, whereas digital materials are infinite. Family support was nonexistent. Azim explained that it’s been hard for South Asian Muslims like herself to convince family members that there’s a place in the arts for her. “When you’re an immigrant, the story you’re told about what success is different,” she said. “I don’t think it’s because of some stereotype of culture … that we aim for just these three jobs: doctor, engineer, or lawyer. POTATO DREAMS OF AMERICA is screening at SIFF 2021! Catch our new interview with director Wes Hurley: bit.ly/redefinepotato⠀ ⠀ ///⠀ ⠀ Seattle writer and director Wes Hurley’s feature debut, Potato Dreams, is at once a colorful pastiche of past memories and an unconventional queer coming-of-age tale. Premiering at SXSW 2021, the film is set partly in Vladivostok, Russia, just after the fall of Communism, and partly in Seattle, Washington, after Hurley and his mother eventually immigrate there.⠀ ⠀ While still in Russia, Hurley is portrayed by Hersh Powers as “Little Potato” — a young boy who becomes obsessed with American movies as soon as bootleg TV channels become available. He shares company with his mother (Sera Barbieri), who works as a nurse in the corrupt prison system, and his grandmother (Lea DeLaria), whose love is cold and stern. Also in the atmosphere are peer-aged students Little Potato has almost nothing in common with, and a flamboyant Jesus Christ (Jonathan Bennett), which symbolizes Hurley’s “obsession” with Jesus as a young Christian boy.⠀ ⠀ Complete with world-bending elements of magical realism, custom-built sets, musical numbers, and plenty of ensemble cast, Potato Dreams of America manages to squeeze a deeply considered aesthetic and high production value out of a modest budget. RAW ESSENCE: The Durational Performance Art of Annabel Turrado,featuring an interview. Article by Rana San @ranitasan - http://bit.ly/redefineraw⠀ ⠀ In Raspado, using a tool for making Mexican snow cones, she calls for the abolishment of ICE through a repetitive deliberate gesture, shaving away at a solid 50-pound block of ice for 3.5 hours. The physical implications of this exertion remain largely undocumented in the video, though the blood, sweat, scrapes, and aches are easily inferred. “My parents immigrated to California in the 70s from a small town outside of Guadalajara, Mexico,” Turrado reflects, “so that unborn us (my siblings and I) didn’t have to grow up breaking our backs like they did.”⠀ ⠀ Tiling nine asynchronous frames of action, she crafts an audiovisual cacophony, a dizzying accumulation of street sounds and curious strangers set against a relentlessly rhythmic scraping.⠀ ⠀ //⠀ ⠀ This piece is one of a series showing at Yellow Fish Durational Performance Art Festival VI — a long form inquiry into durational performance as a means to support methods of staying alive in our present times.
