Magnus Gertten Interview: Nelly & Nadine Stylishly Excavates Queer Family Histories - new interview by Alison Smith @alison.j.smith ~~ READ: https://bit.ly/redefinemagnus // Swedish director Magnus Gertten‘s stunning documentary Nelly & Nadine (2022) is bookended by a triumphant black-and-white film reel of hundreds of women with fists in the air, kissing each other’s cheeks. In 1945, they arrived in the Swedish port of Malmö as refugees newly liberated from the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Yet amidst the jubilation, one face stands out: that of Nadine Hwang, the daughter of a Chinese diplomat and a member of the French resistance. One of the few women identified by historians, she stares plaintively at the camera, as though lost... “As a filmmaker, you need something that feels like an impossible mission, because then you get obsessed by your film,” says Gertten. “I was so sure . . . [I was] not going to do anything else more [about World War II]. Leah Nguyen Artist Interview: Energy Signatures to Heal the Soul - by @katharinameifa READ THE INTERVIEW: https://bit.ly/redefinesoul /// Interdisciplinary Seattle artist Leah Meridoc Nguyen @plantpaintpeople (they/she) has come to understand their body, mind, and soul as an instrument that — when tuned to the right frequency — has the capacity to heal themselves and others. As a self-described artist-healer, Nguyen works in collaboration with the metaphysical to create visual tools and templates that serve as medicine for both individual and collective healing. “I’m fundamentally wired in the world, I think, as a healer…” says Nguyen. “The desire in me was [always] to create something beautiful and healing for the world, to make something that was tonic to… the imbalance[s] that felt [present].” Hailing from a long line of artists on her father’s side and gardeners and naturalists on her mother’s, Nguyen began nurturing her bond to plant medicine and artmaking from a very young age. The patterns were intended to return water to its original harmonious state. They have placed it over waterways that are close to their home, such as the Lower Duwamish Waterway and Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State, as well as the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. FUTURE ARTS INTERVIEW: Recontextualizing “Nature as Queen” in a New Media World - new long-form feature with @futureartsco by Katharina Brinschwitz @katharinameifa ~ READ THE INTERVIEW: https://bit.ly/redefinefuture /// After being the first feminist digital art piece to go viral on multiple social media platforms in 2018, #GlitchGoddess by world-renowned three-dimensional computer graphics artist and animator, Marjan Moghaddam, made a reappearance for AUGMENT. Moghaddam’s projects are disruptions that ripple through the art, politics, culture, and philosophy of the globalized technological and anthropocenic world, often incorporating Moghaddam’s personal experience of being an Iranian refugee and that of femme experiences globally. When its QR code was scanned, the #GlitchGoddess filter appeared with the prompt “Tap to Place,” and once a spot on the screen was touched, #GlitchGoddess came to life. In Moghaddam’s original style of animation called Chronometric Sculpture, the distorted #GlitchGoddess began to strut in place, as if walking a runway. Each subsequent time participants touched the runway model, her rippling red-white-black form morphed between figures that were slender and heavy; old and young; curved and angular. /// Shown as a part of AUGMENT earlier this year, curated by Future Arts. A voiceover by Melissa (BONI) Young (Tulalip), played through participants’ phones, reciting in the Lushootseed language the traditional names of three local plants:  stəgʷəadac (Salmonberry), c̓əx̌ʷədac (Indian Plum), and xʷəlčƛ̕ (Wild Ginger). /// For three weeks at the end of August 2022, Future Arts hosted their first outdoor showcase, AUGMENT Seattle, in the tech-centered South Lake Union neighborhood. On her latest EP, Nine Spells, Berlin-based Italian artist @JolandaMoletta has crafted invocations which are dedicated to nine of her female ancestors, as well as herself as a child. The vocal-only record is devoid of specific words — yet it draws plenty of inspiration from spellcasting, where voice is the primary tool used. Moletta also bolsters the spells using small spell bottles through the album’s artwork, which features numerous pages of hand-crafted collages alongside narrative storytelling. “I consider music to be one of the most beautiful, ancient forms of magic. Sound creates organized patterns at a physical level, and these can shape our daily lives and our reality. Music influences our inner world through emotion. These emotions can inspire us to act and create new worlds…” shares Moletta. “These spells have a double meaning and are both personal and universal. I offer them to inspire people to go and find their place in the world and to have the courage to be creative in anything that they do.” Read on for the music video premiere of the track, “Spell V: Like Honey Hidden in a Hidden Cave,” which was directed by Moletta and filmed in Italy; she also answers questions about the album’s creative process and interdisciplinary approach. Dawn Jones Redstone Interview: Reflecting on a Film Career Centered on Transformational Journeys ~ Full interview by @alison.j.smith at https://bit.ly/redefinedawn /// @motherofcolorfilm (2022), the first feature-length film from Portland-based filmmaker @dawnjonesredstone, explores the nexus of race- and gender-based marginalization through a day-in-the-life of Noelia, played by Ana del Rocío. A second-generation Latina, Noelia struggles to suppress generational trauma while juggling a dizzying number of responsibilities. Asked about the genesis of the film, Jones Redstone says, “It was definitely Ana.” Jones Redstone came to know del Rocío while filming her campaign video for a local election in Portland. Elected in 2017 as the second person of color ever to serve on the David Douglas school board, del Rocío’s balancing act as the single mother of two boys inspired the character of Noelia. Jones Redstone explains, “It just struck me, this tension around wanting to raise good boys to be good men. I also thought… ‘What if someone like Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez had kids? Would she ever get in this position that she’s in now? Diversity Boss, Equity Keep, and Inclusion Lite (DBEKIL) and The Art Residency are short video collage works that mock the horrors of institutional DEI efforts and crappy artist residencies the world over. Replete with sarcastic voiceover and deep analysis shrouded in a shallow veneer of internet humor, they draw from an amalgam of numerous artists’ experiences suffering at the hands of white supremacy, white supremacist structures, and/or well-meaning [fill-in-the-blanks] who think they’re doing something good, but actually could be a helluva lot better.
