Top Pops! Magic Trick (Tim Cohen of The Fresh & Onlys), Money, Psychic Twin MP3 Downloads & Streams

“Pop music shouldn’t always get a bad rap,” says Top Pops!, a recurring selection of pop music highlights across a selection of styles.

Psychic Twin

This adorable single from Illinois pop duo Psychic Twin comes as a part of Lefse Records’ upcoming 7″ series, which begins June 26th. Psychic Twin are kicking off the series with “Gonna Get Her” b/w “Deepest Part”. May the reverb-laden, echoey vocals of vocalist Erin Fein whirl into your brainnnnnn as they remind you about the temporary, transient nature of all things and the importance of letting go.

Each single will be limited to 500 copies, and will also be made available digitally. The next installments will include artists like Field Mouse, Sun Glitters, Mister Lies, an electronic side project of Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and Big Search (Matt Popieluch of Fools Gold/Foreign Born).

Money

Just released on June 4th is the latest single from UK musicians Money. In “So Long (GODISDEAD)”, harmonic vocal flickers push forth an ethereal but choral quality, like a group of angels, as drums burst onto the scene in praise. It’s easy to see why the Manchester musicians are receiving exuberant press all across the global board, as this is uplifting music that speaks blatantly of feelings without degrading into cheesy territory. (Though yes, they are saying “God is dead,” but passed through this filter, this idea doesn’t seem bad at all!)

Magic Trick

Magic Trick, the side project of Tim Cohen of San Francisco’s The Fresh & Onlys, has a new record coming out, entitled Ruler Of The Night. It is the band’s second effort for Seattle’s Hardly Art label, and offers a welcome change to the label’s primarily garage rock roster with some avant-garde folk rock attitudes. The result of Cohen’s solo experiments that are later fleshed out by a full band, Magic Trick is a stripped down capture of the songwriter’s individual experiences, with an explicitly cathartic goal. As Cohen details to SPIN: “I’ve trained myself to respond to every situation by turning it into a melody. There is darkness, but I think the darkness goes into the music.”

Much of his efforts work under a guideline of “first-thought-best-thought”, allowing Cohen to embrace intuitive, spontaneous creation and all of the consequences which naturally stem from it (diversity, experimentation, etc.). Get lost in the ’50s-influenced romance of “Torture” below, and check out “Invisible At Midnight” HERE.
