On July 3rd, Los Angeles electronic duo Nguzunguzu released their debut record on Hippos In Tanks Records, their Warm Pulse EP. Outlands
Glad to have recovered this narrowly missed, went-straight-to-spam submission from Outlands! This six-track self-titled EP beaut just dropped July 7th via Chill Mega Chill Records.
Beginning with the dark and throbbing “The Looming”, the album brightens up as it progresses — kind of — by dragging itself slowly through a hypnotic and atonal cave into a universe of a Fever Ray record. The percussive variety is rich with depth and spirit, with “Black Ops” being a personal favorite for this. A funny point to note: “Broken English” sounds bizarrely like a drearier version of Beat Connection’s “Think/Feel”. Weird.
BEAK>
BEAK> is the side project of Geoff Barrow, member of Portishead, Billy Filler, and Matt Williams, and it’s been getting good reviews across the board for great reason. It is an excellent example of building pressure and releasing it at just the perfect times, with a krautrock-like approach to droning sounds into your brain like an unrelenting power tool on low power. Expect a full feature soon.
